about

This is one of the first songs I ever wrote where the chords came before the lyrics. I was staying at a lake house when I hit upon the chord cycle for the verse and took inspiration from the sunset going down across the lake from the dock.

lyrics

With fire across the firmament,
The sunset cast aflame -
With waves lapping upon the shore,
Red with blood of the day -
We sat together upon the dock,
Avoiding each others’ gaze.
Her voice was quiet when she asked
If I would stay.

The world seemed wider
When we were young -
A vast & open space.
But time’s a river and not a lake -
Sadly, our view will change.

I kept my silence as night came down,
As stars emerged in its wake.
I felt our foundations trembling,
With tides shift and sway.
She touched my hand
And I grasped her back -
Unsure beneath the unwieldy weight
Of her mistake.

The world seemed wider
When we were young -
A vast & open space.
But time’s a river and not a lake -
Sadly, our view does change.

With the background groan
Of creaking wood,
And mooring rotting through,
If her breath seemed more a sob,
I was unknotting, too.
She may regret the harm she’d done -
She could not my heart unbruise.

The world seemed wider
When we were young -
A vast & open space.
But time’s a river and not a lake -
Sadly, we will change.

Out beyond us in the dark,
A night bird splashed for prey -
I knew my next words to eviscerate
Much the same way.
“I forgive you, oh, my love -
But we’ll never be the same.
For all remorse and desperate hope -
I cannot stay.”

The world seemed wider
When we were young -
A vast & open space.
But time’s a river and not a lake -
Sadly, we have changed.

about

Ineloquent SD Charleston, South Carolina

Ineloquent SD is a queer musical cryptid. Their lyrics are heavily informed by their experiences with disability, chronic pain, poisoned perfectionism, and being queer in the South. Their instrumentation, on the other hand, is heavily informed by fucking around and finding out. They never much believed in being coherent or consistent. ... more
